Join In - Adults

If you have not already done so, then you should call the section leader where you think you would like to help out. There are basically 2 levels of application: Occasional Helper and Member (or Associate Member.)

Occasional Helper. You will need to fill out an occasional helper form if you are over 18 and want to be involved in any of the youth sections more than about once per month. The occasional helper process requires CRB clearance so you also will need to complete a CRB form.

Section leaders need to chaperone adults without CRB clearances
Occasional helpers are extremely valuable

th10Member and Associate Member. More formal membership is open to people who have a particular scouting job in mind; for example, section assistants and formally appointed skills instructors. There are no specified working hours. Members must make the Scout Promise and may wear uniform. Promise and uniform are optional for associate members.

CRB Forms. We will provide you with a CRB form because they have unique numbers which we need to record.

How Much Does It Cost? There is no fee to join 3rd Portchester as an adult supporter. Adults generally buy their own uniforms but we can help with this too. We will meet reasonable expenses and training fees; for example, adventurous activities qualifications.

What Happens Next. Forms are reviewed by the Group Scout Leader (Trish) or by Caryl. Preferably, one of them will arrange to meet with you to go through the details since it is fairly easy to make clerical errors. The forms then go off to the Dictrict Commissioner (Tony Parkinson) for approval. You will be able to start work as soon as the Scout Association has made a satidfactory initial enquiry; this usually takes a few weeks. Volunteers for specific appointments will generally be interviewed; this is a welcome rather than a test and gives you the chance to ask questions about your role, support and training available to you outside the Group.

Do It Online. From the end of July 2010 it should be possible to do more of this process on line.

Contacts. Here are some useful contacts if you have found it difficult to pin down any of the other leaders!
