The group was formed in 1947, and is based in Portchester, which lies on the northern shore of Portsmouth Harbour.
Membership is open to all boys and girls in the area and the group consists of 2 beaver colonies (aged 6 to 8), two cub packs (aged 8 to 10½), two Sea Scouts troops (aged 10½ to 14) a land scout troop (aged 10½ to 14). Watkins Explorer Scout Unit is based with us and works very closely with the Group.
We have around 200 members at present, of which about 50 are Sea Scouts. The Sea Scouts are one of only 101 groups recognised by the Royal Navy for their high standards. Most of our sea scout leaders have RYA or BCU qualifications for sailing, power boating and kayaking.
3rd Portchester is recognised by the Royal Yachting Association as a dinghy sailing training establishment.
The group is committed to the physical, mental and spiritual development of young people through an adventurous and challenging training programme so they can take a constructive place in society. We do our best to cater for members with special needs.
